In the Judeo-Christian faith tradition the people of Israel, who had previously been enslaved by the Egyptian Empire, were set free by their God. He led them to a Promised Land in order to enjoy a life of abundance instead of oppression. Before entering the land, Israel’s leadership sent twelve spies to observe the nations currently occupying Canaan. Out of those twelve, two returned with confidence that despite the wealth and strength of their enemies God would give them victory and establish them in the land for generations to come. Caleb was one of them. We selected the name CALEB because we are confident that despite wealth and power of our oppressors we will achieve victory and establish justice, equity, and an abundance of life in our city.
CALEB (Chattanooga in Action for Love, Equality, and Benevolence) represents the needs and goals of our community by bringing together different groups who share the same vision for Chattanooga and its betterment. We are an institutional coalition of congregations, labor unions, and other community organizations in order for their constituents to gain a powerful voice in public affairs and address issues in the greater Chattanooga area. United, we are able to build power, affect change and pursue justice & equity for all people within our city and beyond.
Our major goals are:
- To organize community members around collectively identified economic, political, and social issues.
- To mobilize leadership and members of congregations, unions and other community organizations to empower the people within their communities.
- To enhance the quality of life in Chattanooga by increasing the number of trained organization & community members actively involved in pursuing change regardless of race, gender, age, class or religion.
- To raise funds in order to accomplish our goals.
